I feel just a lil guilty. Just a lil bit. Not a lot, baby girl, just a lil bit. I love basketball and I also love the draft, but I needed a breather this time around. Maybe it's the fact that I'm still reeling from an abrupt end to a 106 game marathon. Maybe it's the fact that every time I go to my Instagram explore page it's some variation of the Warriors parade or a depressed Jayson Tatum walking off the Garden floor for the last time this season. Or maybe, and this is the probable reason, it's because Season 8 of Southern Charm premiered last night. Whatever the reason, I just needed a break from hoops. The week in between Game 6 and the draft wasn't enough. Also, Woj and Shams break the tweets about 3 minutes before Silver or Tatum speak into the microphone. It was actually a lovely evening.
I was able to watch Southern Charm while scrolling twitter and finding out the picks. Some might say that's my bliss. Katherine and Naomi got into a catfight and 3 Arizona players got drafted. Full night of theater for me.
All of that said, there's a few things I want to get off my chest regarding this draft:
-The Magic took the best player at #1. What a job by the Magic front office. In an effort to become their very namesake, they showed the general public smoke and mirrors. Guys guys, it's Jabari for sure at 1. Wellllll, we're hearing some Chet banter but I don't think he wants to go to Orlando. And then finally, about 10 minutes before we get started, Woj tweets that Paolo is very much in consideration to be the first overall pick. What a roller coaster. Like a Michael Scott vasectomy. Snip snap, snip snap:
But they got it right. I've said since the game against Texas Tech in the tournament where he dropped 22, 4 & 4 that Paolo Banchero should be the #1 overall pick. His game is like Miguel Rivera from Coco. A good type of stubborn when he's in the trenches but also has game outside of the paint that moves you to tears with how beautiful it is. Miguel is stubborn in pursuing his musical dream and he evokes the water works when he plays Remember Me to Mama Coco. Banchero will body you down low with his size and strength or he can pluck the perfect strings at the top of the key and hit a shot right over you. Paolo Bancoco.
Now outside of Wendell Carter they don't really have a big. Maybe if I've had a full 8 hours of sleep, a piping hot cup of coffee from my French press and I'm feeling generous I'll give you Mo Bamba. Outside of that it's Bol Bol and Jonathan Isaac whose knee is parmesan cheese. The Magic Show will be driven by Suggs, Paolo & Franz. Let's not forget about RJ Hampton's potential as well. Hug for the Magic.
-DEEEEETROIIIIIT BASKETBALLLLLL. I'm excited for the Motor City and their fans. They deserve a winner and I think we're going to see them compete for a playoff spot in the next couple of years. Cade, Ivey & Duren are the cornerstones. Bey can put up points. I've said for a while now that Ivey is the biggest boom or bust guy in the lottery but man... if he booms? Look out. The most explosive player in college basketball and the epitome of theater. It's a wrap when he gets downhill to the bucket. Speed reminiscent of John Wall. I love what the Pistons did in this draft. It's now up to Dwane Casey to mold this young group and make them competitive. He's a former COY, so it's not out of the realm. The Central division is young and fun. You got the Cavs who competed for a playoff spot, the Pistons, the Pacers have a fun future in Mathurin & Haliburton, the big dogs in the Bucks and of course the Bulls who are solid. That will be a division to keep an eye on in a couple of years.
-How in the world did Jeremy Sochan go at 9? He's a fine player. Really good defensively and on the glass. Maybe I'm missing something but I want an impact player at that spot. I don't see him being a serious difference maker for the Spurs. Can't really score, shot is hideous, not a great free throw shooter. Just doesn't move the needle for me. I had concerns about him, Keegan Murray and AJ Griffin. I think Griffin was taken at the right spot. Keegan & Sochan were a bit too high for my taste but at least there's potential for Keegan. I just don't understand the Sochan pick. I think Mark Williams or Jalen Duren will be better pros. I said this on the latest pod but how much longer are we going to give the Spurs a pass? Pop's resume is beyond question. An all time great coach. But can we finally say that they've flat out stunk for the past 4 years or so? Is that taboo?
-Roddy the Body and Jake LaRavia. I think these guys were the biggest shockers for me. I don't know how their game is going to translate to the next level but I don't think many people had David Roddy going at 23 and LaRavia at 19. Drafting is funny. If you told someone who doesn't follow basketball that LaRavia's teammate won ACC POY and went undrafted but he went 19, they'd be so confused. But think of the BEEF in Memphis. Roddy, Bane & Tillman. Like a pastrami on rye at your local Jewish deli. These picks have my brain very tangled.
-Bob Myers continues his stranglehold on the draft. Patrick Baldwin Jr. and Ryan Rollins were both great picks in my estimation. Baldwin was a highly recruited stud out of high school, went to a small school in Milwaukee and was injured for most of his freshman campaign. Rollins was Toledo's leader and although they came up short the last 2 years, were a very good team as a result of his play. The Warriors don't really need anything. But if these guys, Kuminga, Moody and Wiseman can absorb as much as possible from 3 Hall of Famers (potentially 4... Don't laugh. Wiggins might be in Springfield) then the future is somehow still bright for the NBA's modern dynasty.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to dive into more Bravo and Netflix.
